Last year, I participated in a university town hall on water and was on a panel with someone from the Biology Department, Engineering, and Gwendolyn from Fashion Merchandising. “Fashion Merchandising?” you ask. Yes! Gwendolyn makes silk prints inspired by the Edwards Aquifer and other environmental settings!
Gwendolyn slipped me a note on the dias stating that it was her dream to have an art show at the Meadows Center. I slipped a note back that said “We can make that happen.” And, thanks to Meadows Miranda, we did!
Groundwork displays Gwendolyn’s beautiful silkwork, turning the upper stairwell of Spring Lake Hall into a colorful boutique art gallery. The Bride and I traveled down to San Marcos for the opening this past Sunday and enjoyed the work as well as visiting with Gwendolyn (and some old friends that showed up as well!).
Gwendolyn’s art is fun and colorful with elements of surface and subsurface hydrology and biology. There’s even phreatophyte art!
The show will remain at Spring Hall through April 26th. Entry is free, as is parking on the weekends. You are also welcome to visit some of the critters represented on silk in Discovery Hall on the first floor (also free!). You can also make a day of it by taking a glass bottom boat ride and hearing about the site from one of our (often student) environmental interpreters. In addition, Gwendolyn is holding a Spring Flow silk painting workshop on February 28th at the Meadows Center.

I want that t-shirt, Dead canaries everywhere.
